Invisalign

Invisalign is a new system of straightening teeth without the use of conventional braces. A series of clear plastic aligners are utilized to create tooth movement. Moving teeth with removable aligners is not new. However, the computer program, which can generate a series of aligners with small changes is the new part. Invisalign is recommended for orthodontic situations with mild to moderate spacing or crowding. They are virtually undetectable, easy to use and comfortable to wear.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign braces are created through the use of computer imaging technology.  Your orthodontist will take a bite impression of your mouth and then use the 3 – D imaging system to create your own customized brace retainers.  With every treatment, you will receive new invisalign braces so that you will continuously have pressure to move your teeth into the right position.  The average number of clear retainers that you may have are anywhere from 18 to 30.

Using Invisalign Braces

Each retainer is worn for about two weeks before changing retainers.  You must have it on during all times except while you eat.  It is difficult to assess how much time you will need to wear these clear braces as the timeframe is determined by the severity of the problem and by your response to the treatment.  Therefore, the system of changing retainers every two weeks occurs until the teeth are in the right position.  Orthodontists state that this system takes just as long as traditional braces.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Since this orthodontic treatment is normally reserved for adults, the greatest benefit of using Invisalign is that no one will even know that you are receiving orthodontic care since they are invisible and removable.  But the cosmetic aspect is not the only benefit of using Invisalign.  Invisalign is also better for dental hygiene.  With traditional braces, food can become lodged between the braces making it difficult to effectively clean your teeth.  With Invisalign, you take out your braces when you eat and brush your teeth.  There are no obstructions to your dental hygiene routine.

There may be mild discomfort while changing Invisalign retainers, especially if you have sensitive gums.  If you do not use invisalign as suggested by your orthodontist, then it will take much longer for your teeth to move to their correct position.  Nonetheless, the benefits outweigh the problems since you are able to avoid staining your teeth, to eat whatever you want, to perform your dental hygiene routine as usual and to have a perfect smile without flashing metal.
